Boulder, CO - Representative Junie Joseph released the following statement in response to today's attack in Boulder at the Run for Their Lives event.
I am heartbroken and outraged by the horrific attack that took place this afternoon on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. What was intended to be a peaceful demonstration of solidarity—organized by Run For Their Lives to raise awareness for Israeli hostages in Gaza—was instead shattered by a senseless act of violence that left several individuals seriously injured, and may have taken a life.
Violence has no place in our community. Targeting people based on their identity or beliefs is not only hateful and cowardly—it is fundamentally at odds with the values of peace, dignity, and inclusivity that we hold dear in Boulder and across Colorado. I unequivocally condemn this act and all forms of hate.
My heart is with the victims, their families, the Jewish community, and all those who are grieving and shaken by this tragedy. I am also deeply grateful to the first responders and law enforcement officers who acted swiftly to secure the scene and apprehend the suspect.
Boulder is home to a thriving Jewish community that contributes immeasurably to the cultural, civic, and moral fabric of our city. Without their presence, leadership, and history, we would not be the community we are. Today’s attack is not just an assault on individuals—it is an assault on the very values of inclusion, freedom, and humanity that bind us together.
As we grapple with the pain of this moment, we must also reflect on the responsibility we all share in shaping public discourse. When conversations—on any issue—become dehumanizing or extreme, they can lead to dangerous consequences. Let us reject the path of hate and violence, and instead foster a culture of dialogue rooted in empathy, dignity, and peace.
In this painful moment, let us draw strength from one another. Let us reject hatred and fear, and recommit ourselves to compassion, understanding, and unity. We stand together—now and always—against hate in all its forms.
