Rep. Junie Joseph Responds to Supreme Court Decision on Gerrymandering

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 29, 2026

DENVER, Co - Today, Representative Junie Joseph issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais (24-109), which addressed the role of race in congressional redistricting and narrowed how protections under the Voting Rights Act may be applied.

“Today’s decision is deeply concerning for the future of fair representation in our democracy,” said Rep. Joseph. “At a time when communities across the country are fighting to ensure their voices are heard, this ruling moves us in the wrong direction. The ability of voters—especially communities of color—to elect candidates of their choice is foundational to a functioning democracy.”

Rep. Joseph emphasized that this decision underscores the importance of state-level protections like the Colorado Voting Rights Act (SB25-001), which she proudly sponsored and helped pass into law. The Act strengthens safeguards against voter suppression and dilution, ensuring equitable access to the ballot and protecting the rights of historically underrepresented communities.

“In Colorado, we chose a different path,” Joseph continued. “By passing the Colorado Voting Rights Act, we made it clear that our state will not wait for federal protections to be weakened before taking action. We are committed to ensuring that every voter—regardless of race, language, or background—has a fair and equal opportunity to participate in our elections.”

Rep. Joseph reaffirmed Colorado’s commitment to protecting democratic values and ensuring fair representation for all.

“Colorado will continue to lead. We will fight to ensure that every person is represented fairly, that every voice is heard, and that our democracy reflects the people it serves.”
