Protecting Immigrant Communities Strengthens Boulder and Colorado’s Future

BOULDER, Colo. — As Colorado continues to face workforce shortages, housing pressures, and rising costs of living, local leaders are calling for renewed efforts to protect and support immigrant communities — a cornerstone of the state’s economic and social vitality.

“Protecting our immigrant communities isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s an investment in Colorado’s future,” said Representative Junie Joseph. “Immigrants are essential to our economy, our culture, and our collective strength as a state.”

According to the Colorado Fiscal Institute, immigrants contribute over $54 billion annually to Colorado’s economic output. They represent 12% of the state’s labor force and own 12.2% of small businesses, employing thousands of Coloradans and fueling growth across multiple industries.

In Boulder County, more than 32,000 immigrants — roughly 10% of the population — live, work, and raise families. They make up 12% of the local labor force and 12% of business owners, underscoring their role as both workers and job creators.

Across the state, immigrant workers are vital to industries such as construction, agriculture, healthcare, and technology.

• Immigrants make up 21% of Colorado’s construction workforce, 17% of agricultural jobs, and 16% of transportation and utilities workers, according to FWD.us.

• Immigrant-led households contribute billions in state and local taxes each year while driving consumer spending and supporting local businesses.

• Immigrant entrepreneurs and innovators have also launched startups and small businesses that add resilience and diversity to Colorado’s economy.

  
  

“Immigrant families are part of the fabric of Boulder,” said Representative Joseph. “They are parents, neighbors, and small business owners who make our community stronger every day. When we protect them, we protect the future of our state.”

Advocates are urging policymakers to continue advancing initiatives that expand opportunity and safeguard immigrant families, including:

• Ensuring fair treatment and protection from discrimination and unjust enforcement.

• Expanding access to legal pathways, workforce development, and language support.

• Supporting immigrant-owned small businesses through training and capital access.

• Promoting inclusive policies that encourage civic engagement and economic participation.
